FAQ

Counselling is when a registered psychologist helps people explore and better manage their psychological health and general well-being. The primary goal of counselling is to provide support and guidance to help people better cope with a variety of psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, relationship difficulties, stress management, personal development, behavioural changes and emotional regulation.

Counselling support and guidance can help people cope with various life challenges, make better decisions and improve their overall well-being.

Counsellors use a variety of evidence-based strategies and techniques to help their clients. The effectiveness of counselling may vary depending on individual needs and the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client.

Counselling provides a confidential and supportive environment where individuals can openly discuss their concerns and work toward positive changes in their lives. It is important to help clients feel secure by establishing trust in the therapeutic relationship.

Confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of the counselling relationship. Information shared during the counselling sessions is private and will be kept confidential to the best extent allowed by law and the APS professional code of ethics.

The limits of confidentiality. There are certain situations where confidentiality may need to be breached to ensure the safety and well-being of the client or others. Situations that may require disclosure, such as if there is a risk of self-harm or harming someone else or if there’s suspected abuse or neglect involving a vulnerable person.

If you are attending counselling under a mental health care plan psychologists are required to provide a progress report to your treating GP.

It really does depend on the reason why someone is attending counselling. Some people come in for just a few sessions to assist them with a specific issue that is concerning them at that time. Others come with the hope to develop strategies to reduce or manage symptoms, and this can take about 6 – 10 sessions. While others may attend regular counselling as a preventative measure, addressing issues before they escalate into more serious problems.

The initial consultation process is designed to establish a foundation for the therapeutic relationship and gather essential information. During the first session, there is an opportunity for you to assess whether you feel comfortable and supported by the counsellor.

What you can generally expect in the first session, the counsellor will introduce themselves, explain the confidentiality guidelines and explain their therapeutic approach and what you expect in future sessions. You may be asked to fill out paperwork, which could include information about your personal history, current concerns, and any relevant background.

You’ll have the opportunity to discuss your reasons for seeking counselling and your goals for the sessions.

Medicare rebates for counselling services refer to financial assistance provided by the Australian government to individuals seeking mental health care services. In Australia, the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) includes a range of psychological services covered under the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.

To be eligible for a Medicare rebate for counselling sessions, individuals typically need a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). The referral includes a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Some of the various approved treatments under the Medicare’s Better Access to Mental Health Care Program, include cognitive-behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy, relaxation and stress management techniques, skills training including problem solving skills, anger management and communication skills.
