The negative impacts of suppressing our emotions

Written by Amanda Hefez

Why do we suppress our emotions? People may suppress their feelings for various reasons, including:

1

Social Expectations

Societal norms and expectations may dictate that certain emotions are not acceptable or appropriate to express openly. For example, individuals may feel pressure to appear strong or composed, leading them to suppress feelings of vulnerability or sadness.

2

Fear of Judgment

People may fear being judged, criticised, or rejected if they express their true feelings. This fear of negative evaluation can lead individuals to suppress emotions to avoid potential social consequences.

3

Cultural Background

Cultural factors play a significant role in how emotions are expressed and perceived. In some cultures, there may be a stigma surrounding certain emotions, such as anger or sadness, leading individuals to suppress these feelings to conform to cultural norms.

4

Past Trauma

Experiences of past trauma or adverse childhood experiences can contribute to emotional suppression as a coping mechanism. Suppressing emotions may be a way for individuals to protect themselves from re-experiencing painful emotions associated with trauma.

5

Avoidance of Conflict

Some people suppress their feelings to avoid conflict or confrontation in relationships. They may fear that expressing their true feelings will lead to disagreement, argument, or relationship strain.

6

Self-Protection

Suppressing emotions can be a form of self-protection or self-preservation. Individuals may suppress feelings of shame, guilt, or embarrassment to protect their self-image and maintain a sense of identity or self-worth.

7

Lack of Emotional Awareness

Some individuals may lack awareness of their own emotions or have difficulty identifying and labelling their feelings. This emotional unawareness can make it challenging for individuals to express their feelings in a healthy and constructive manner. If we were not taught in childhood how to work with our emotions, we may struggle to express or process our feelings as an adult.

8

Coping Mechanism

Emotional suppression may serve as a coping mechanism for dealing with overwhelming emotions or stressful situations. Individuals may suppress their feelings as a way to temporarily alleviate discomfort or distress.

9

Cultural Gender Norms

Gender norms and stereotypes can influence how emotions are expressed and perceived. For example, men may feel pressure to suppress emotions such as sadness or vulnerability due to societal expectations of masculinity.

10

Learned Behaviour

Individuals may learn to suppress their emotions based on observing others’ behaviours and responses to emotions within their families, peer groups, or communities. If emotional suppression is modelled or reinforced, individuals may adopt similar coping strategies.

11

Lack of emotional support

Some people may suppress their emotions because they did not receive healthy emotional support in their childhood. They did not experience validation or recognition of their feelings as a child. This can lead to trying to manage the way others feel by people pleasing or constantly seeking approval. Always self-sacrificing or putting other people’s feelings and needs ahead of our own. Possibly feeling too scared to express how we really feel because in the past we were made to feel bad or to feel we were causing a problem whenever we tried to express our true feelings.

The negative impacts of suppressing emotions

It’s important to recognise that while emotional suppression may provide temporary relief, it can have negative consequences for mental, emotional, and physical well-being in the long term. Developing healthy coping mechanisms and seeking support from trusted individuals or professionals can help individuals address underlying issues and express their emotions in constructive ways. Here are some reasons why it’s generally considered unhealthy to suppress your feelings:

  1. Increased Stress: When you suppress your emotions, you’re essentially bottling them up inside. Over time, this can lead to increased stress and tension as these emotions build up without an outlet.
  2. Negative Impact on Mental Health: Suppressing emotions can contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. Ignoring or pushing down feelings rather than dealing with them can exacerbate underlying issues.
  3. Difficulty in Problem Solving: Emotions often provide important signals about our needs, desires, and boundaries. By suppressing them, you may hinder your ability to understand and address underlying problems or conflicts.
  4. Impact on Relationships: Bottling up emotions can lead to communication breakdowns in relationships. When you’re not expressing your feelings openly and honestly, it can create distance and misunderstandings between you and others.
  5. Physical Health Effects: Chronic suppression of emotions has been linked to physical health problems such as headaches, digestive issues, and even cardiovascular problems. The mind-body connection means that unresolved emotional issues can manifest as physical ailments.
  6. Loss of Authenticity: Suppressing your feelings can lead to a sense of disconnection from yourself and others. It may prevent you from fully expressing who you are and forming genuine connections with others.
  7. Escalation of Emotions: When emotions are continuously suppressed, they may eventually erupt in uncontrolled outbursts or breakdowns. This can be overwhelming and damaging both to yourself and those around you.

How to process our emotions in healthy ways

Releasing your feelings in healthy ways is essential for emotional well-being and maintaining healthy relationships, preventing them from building up and causing harm. Here are some effective strategies for releasing your emotions in helpful and healthy ways.

  1. Identify Your Feelings: Before you can release your emotions, it’s important to identify and understand what you’re feeling. Take the time to reflect on your emotions and try to pinpoint what you’re experiencing (e.g., anger, sadness, joy, frustration).
  2. Use “I” Statements: If expressing your feelings to another person, use “I” statements to take ownership of your emotions and avoid blaming others. For example, instead of saying, “You always make me feel angry,” you could say, “I feel frustrated when this happens. Authenticity is key when expressing your feelings. Be honest about what you’re experiencing and avoid minimizing or exaggerating your emotions. Always try to keep your feelings in perspective.
  3. Physical Activity: Engaging in physical exercise can be an excellent way to release pent-up emotions. Activities like running, yoga, dancing, or kickboxing can help release tension and promote feelings of well-being through the release of endorphins.
  4. Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques: Practicing deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques such as meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery can help calm the mind and release emotional tension.
  5. Journaling: Writing about your feelings in a journal can provide a safe and private outlet for expressing yourself. Write freely about what you’re experiencing, without judgment or censorship. Reflecting on your emotions can help you gain clarity and perspective.
  6. Talking to Someone: Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend, family member, or therapist can provide validation, support, and perspective. Sometimes, simply verbalizing your emotions can help release their hold on you.
  7. Creative Expression: Engaging in creative activities such as painting, drawing, writing poetry, playing music, or crafting can provide a powerful outlet for expressing emotions that are difficult to put into words.
  8. Crying: Allowing yourself to cry can be a natural and healthy way to release pent-up emotions. Crying can help release stress hormones and provide emotional relief.
  9. Screaming and Vocalising: Sometimes, letting out a primal scream or vocalizing your emotions loudly in a safe space can be cathartic and release built-up tension and frustration.
  10. Seeking Solitude in Nature: Spending time in nature can provide a soothing and grounding environment for releasing emotions. Take a walk in the woods, sit by a lake, or simply spend time outdoors to connect with nature and allow your feelings to flow freely.
  11. Seeking Support: If you’re struggling to express your feelings, don’t hesitate to seek support from trusted friends, family members, or a therapist. Talking to someone who can provide a listening ear and offer guidance can be incredibly helpful.

Learning to process our emotions in healthy ways is part of emotional regulation and is discussed in Chapter 2 of The InSync Method.

Overall, it’s important to acknowledge and process our emotions in healthy ways rather than trying to suppress or ignore them. This might involve talking to a trusted friend or therapist, journaling, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in other forms of self-care and emotional expression.
